BOSTON -- If you were wondering why the Mets sent J.J. Putz to the mound in the bottom of the ninth inning instead of their closer Francisco Rodriguez, it's because K-Rod wasn't available.
Rodriguez was overcome with back spasms prior to the game, according to Mets manager Jerry Manuel.
"He couldn't walk," Manuel said. "He was in bad shape. Spasms was the word they used. How long spasms last, what is his history with that, I really don't know."
Manuel said K-Rod first felt it after batting practice Saturday evening.
