BOSTON -- David Ortiz, the owner of one home run in 38 games this season, stood in the corner of the Red Sox clubhouse Thursday afternoon with a composite bat in his hands. In fact, he had about 10 of them.

No, he's not going to start hitting with the illegal bats. He's sending them to a softball team he sponsors in the Dominican.

He said he used composite bat during BP at Fenway Park a couple of years ago to see how far he could hit the ball, but didn't like it.

As far as his ability to final get a good night sleep after slugging his first homer of the season on Wednesday, Ortiz said he feels good.

"Let's keep it that way," he said. "I'm trying to keep it simple."

Fans at home watching Wednesday's game saw Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield having a one-on-one conversation with Ortiz in the dugout after he hit the homer. When asked what the talk was about, Wakefield said it was personal.

"I just want to help build his confidence and let him know we love him no matter what," Wakefield said.
