BOSTON _ Jed Lowrie is probably about three weeks away from returning to the Red Sox lineup. Still, the club doesn't want to push him too quick even though he would be a welcomed addition to the shortstop position.

Lowrie, who had surgery on his left wrist in April, started to take live BP on Friday and could be a week away from a minor-league rehab assignment.

"He's doing good. The biggest thing right now is stamina [with the wrist] and as he goes he feels a little fatigued, which is certainly understandable. He's doing terrific. He's a real conscientious kid. He puts in his time and he's thoughtful when you ask him a question."

Lowrie, who was the Opening Day starter, has also been taking ground balls and is chomping at the bit to return.

"We don't want to send him out there too soon because that will be a mistake," said Francona. "Rather than try to rush, we'll do what's in his best interest because that will be in our best interest."
