BOSTON _ The hot-shot liner carried into shallow right field and away from the dreaded defensive shift, proving to be the lone RBI for the Red Sox Friday.
Boston suffered a 5-1 defeat at the hands of the surging Texas Rangers at Fenway Park, but David Ortiz registered the RBI. It may not have helped the Sox' cause Friday from a team standpoint, but from a personal observation it could prove crucial for the struggling slugger.
"You're only as good as your last at-bat," is a popular saying in the baseball world. Maybe Ortiz, who went 1-for-4, can carry his last at-bat momentum into Saturday's game and beyond.
When asked if he felt good about the RBI single, Ortiz had a simple answer: "Of course."
That RBI was Ortiz's 752nd of his career and it matches a former Red Sox slugger Mo Vaughn's club mark for ninth all-time. Rico Petrocelli is eighth with 773.
