PHILADELPHIA - After a grueling stretch of emotional wins, extra innings and rain delays, Terry Francona is trying to find rest for all of his players. Even Dustin Pedroia.
Pedroia does not enjoy off-days. He's always among the first players to report to the park and his fidgety nature doesn't equate with sitting and watching but that's what he did on Sunday.
"I'm just beat up a little bit. My legs feel heavy," he said. "Tito, he always seems like he (sits players) at the right time."
This certainly appears like the opportune time to sit the reigning American League MVP. He's in the midst of a 4-for-38 slump that included a 1-for-12 effort in three games with the Yankees, an 0-for-7 Friday night and 1-for-6 on Saturday. Sunday was just the first game this season that Pedroia was off for pure rest. He missed two games in Anaheim last month due to a tight groin.
"I've just hit one of those things where I'm not getting a lot of hits. Guys go through that. I'm not worried about it," he said. "I'm just trying to find that consistency. I'm hitting around .300 (.293), that's pretty consistent, but I haven't found that swing to maintain it throughout the year like I did last year but it will come. I'm not panicking or anything like that. I'll be fine."
