By Joe McDonald ATLANTA -- After making his Red Sox debut Thursday in Washington, John Smoltz returned home and slept in his own bed early Friday morning. Around 3 p.m. he drove to Turner Field in his black BMW, and when he walked into the lower bowl of the ballpark he strolled past the home clubhouse for the first time in his career. The veteran right-handed pitcher played 20 seasons for the Braves before he signed with the Red Sox last offseason. He said he knew this weekend would be strange and he's thankful he doesn't have to pitch against his former teammates. "I love this town, but it just so happens I'm doing what I love in another city," he said. "It's good to be home, but I have to get through this weekend and everything that has been building up hopefully will return to normal." Smoltz said he'll always wish the Braves the best, just not this weekend. |
