Getting off the unemployment line is a tough thing these days, and it has certainly been tough for 37-year-old free agent Pedro Martinez. Pedro will get another chance to interest a team in offering him a contract today, though, when he throws a bullpen session in the Dominican Republic for Charley Kerfeld, special assistant to Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. The defending World Series champions have a tough situation in their starting rotation, and they don't appear to have a whole lot of trade chips to offer, so that would explain their interest in Martinez. According to the Philadelphia Daily News, the Phillies are thought to be exploring a variety of options at pitcher, including journeyman Paul Byrd, who finished last season with Boston. |
