BOSTON - The Red Sox have lost an early lead and now trail the Seattle Mariners, 3-2, after four innings. The M's are trying to complete a three-game sweep of the Sox.
The Red Sox jumped on starter Brandon Morrow early as Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz both crushed solo home runs in the first inning.
Jon Lester looked sharp in the first three innings (no runs, three hits, four K's) but ran into trouble in the fourth thanks to some shaky defense.
Two mental errors cost the Sox badly in the fourth inning. After two singles and a strike out, Kenji Johjima grounded sharply to third. Instead of taking the lead out with a force, Youkilis looked for a double play and threw towards second. The throw seemed to surprise Pedroia a bit and he dropped the throw for an error, loading the bases.
Lester nearly escaped unscathed as he struck out Chris Woodward but light-hitting (.147) Ronny Cedeno hit a flare down the right-field line that spelled trouble. Instead of playing the ball on one hop, J.D. Drew made a dive for a ball he appeared to have no shot at catching. The ball not only fell in but quickly scooted past Drew into the corner and all three Mariners raced home.
It's Seattle 3-2 after four.
