ARLINGTON, Texas -- Opposing clubs are hardly running scared against the Red Sox these days.
The Rangers became the latest team to take advantage of a Sox catcher, as they swiped a total of six bases off Jason Varitek Wednesday night. Varitek has only thrown out 7 of 78 runners this season.
Terry Francona can't put his finger on it.
"There isn't one thing," he said. "[Texas] has guys with 17 or 18 stolen bases. They're not dumb, either. They have video and they do the same things we try to do. With [Clay Buchholz] he comes to his set, and they're timing him, and they took off a couple of times early. His times to the plate are excellent."
Buchholz was even surprised by how many the Rangers swiped.
"That's the most steals I've ever had taken off me in one game," he said. "You're not supposed to let anyone steal third base, especially with two outs."
The Rangers set a season-high with the six steals, which is one shy of the club record set back in 1978 at Seattle. The Rays are the only other club to have six steals in a game in 2009 and it was against the Red Sox.
