Chris Duncan, player acquired for Julio Lugo, is released

The man the Red Sox acquired in the Julio Lugo trade, outfielder Chris Duncan, has been released after less than a month with Boston.

Duncan, who is playing with Triple-A Pawtucket, was told of his release after flying out to right field to end tonight's game.

Duncan, a rookie sensation when he came up with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2006, struggled through the first half of this year and earned the ire of the St. Louis fans. With Lugo doing much the same in Boston, the Cardinals and Red Sox swapped one problem for another on July 23, hoping the new environments would invigorate the troubled players. Lugo has thrived in St. Louis, but Duncan was miserable in his time in Pawtucket. The 28-year-old was hitting only .188 with two home runs and 10 RBI in 85 at-bats for the PawSox.

Duncan hit .227 with five home runs and 32 RBI in 260 at-bats for St. Louis this season. He is the brother of Yankee farmhand Shelley Duncan and the son of Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan. Duncan has a .257 average, 55 home runs, and 175 RBI over parts of five major league seasons.

Lugo is hitting .319 with a home run and 14 runs scored in 72 at-bats for the Cardinals.

Card fan here..Thank you for paying Lugo and Smoltz this summer. Sorry Chris didn't work out. But I couldn't believe anyone would trade for him.
Lugo has been an asset. Thanks again and good luck.

Same here. Thanks for the free players. Why would anyone ever trade for Chris Duncan?d

Kevin said:

How has Lugo's defense been in St. Louis and has he been playing SS?

Go Redbirds said:

Lugo has been playing 2B and SS and has made some good plays defensively. Only 1 error so far that I've seen and it was at 2B.

Gary said:

I wouldn't say they were trading for Duncan, as much as getting rid of Lugo. Maybe the player to be named later will work out better than Duncan.

zeb said:

Cards should resign Duncan, then give him back to Boston as the player to be named.

Honestly though, your not getting a player to be named. That wasn't part of this deal.

Zeb, I like the way you think.

Cardinals fans are complete and total jokes. I was at game 3 of the World Series in 2004 and I have never seen a more clueless useless bunch of people.

With Pedro dealing, they never stood up once to cheer their team. They did stand up in the 9th inning after a home run but that was about it.

As a matter of fact, the loudest shouts I heard the whole night were on the set of the baseball tonight show after the game. The classy folks started a 'One Nut Kruk' chant. What a bunch of lowlifes mocking a man who had cancer.

The naysayers should be aware Chris hit 22 home runs in 2006 and 21 in 2007. That's not shabby. He was bothered by some injuries and I'm not sure that his neck is right even now. I am sorry he did not fare well in Pawtucket but I never thought he would be happy there.

yaga, yaga, yaga: If Cards fans are so poor, why is it their stars stay frequently for less money while th Sox must buy their way to contention? You have to know of the reputations of the various teams in baseball. STL is recognized for having the most knowledgable fans while Boston as one of the hardes places to play.

Fred said:

yaga: The Cardinals have 10 World Championships and a good chance at #11 this fall.

How does that compare to the Cubs of the AL?

I came here to read about Duncan's release... And i guess i stayed for the comments. I thought the first few by cards fans were a little out of place, sarcastically thanking sox fans for the players they will be paying on our roster... I get it, just having a little fun. And true. Addition by subtraction for the Sox.

But Yaga, sir, you are not too observant and quite possibly a moron. Baseball nation for the most part hates Red Sox Nation, and that is the because of the way you generally carry yourself in other stadiums, as you follow your beloved Sox as a herd of drunken Frat-boys wearing too small baseball caps.

I was at every playoff and WS game in StL in 2004, and it was a depressing set of events, having our 105 win a$$es handed to us by a wild card team of juicers and self proclaimed "idiots" who got hot at exactly the right time. Maybe that had something to do with the lack of cheering you witnessed. Its a little disheartening to dominate play for a whole season to have your bubble burst by a team of scumbags.

It turns out the true idiots were the many many Sawx fans who were let into our stadium (for free) to celebrate your FIRST championship in 80 some odd years. Leather clad, tobacco chewing, curse-mispronouncing, no letter O pronouncing stupid-accent having northeasterners. Its hard to root for the Yankees, but they win with class and lose with class. The Red Sox as an organization, and a team, do neither with none.

Yang, who will you be rooting for in the WS? Yanks or Cards?

Yaga,

What in the world are you talking about?

If you came to game 3... in STL... then you know that St. Louis was down 2-0, and the play on the field in that game did nothing to warrant the home crowd standing. The powerhouse Cardinals' pitchers were suddenly uber-gun-shy and nibbled for 4 games, getting behind in every count and having to come after your biggest hitters... who, it turns out, were finely tuned and feeling great, after 169 games... because they were on banned substances. wow. Nice. :)

I'm sorry that you measure a fans worth by how much they stand.

I personally have no beef with the Red Sox or Red Sox fans, but you just don't seem to have the capacity to carry on this type of conversation.

In the end, the Cardinals had not won a championship since 1982. Trust me... they were ready and eager to support their team and win, given the chance...

Finally, and most importantly (and conveniently overlooked by you), those horrible Cardinal fans, if I recall, had the NERVE and the GALL to stand and cheer FOR THE RED SOX AND THEIR FANS, OUT OF RESPECT FOR WHAT YOU HAD ENDURED, after game 4 ended, and MLB and the Sox allowed Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore to film a movie, on field, during this sacred moment. How historic for you, that must've been.

Your comments are baseless, and I hope EVERYONE who reads this can see your complete lack of insight.

BTW, tell your Mom I said 'what's up?'

is Yaga yiddish for dumb@$$?

World Series game tickets aren't the easiest items to purchase, and for the most part it isn't real fans at the game. SO it's no surprise that the crowd wasn't into it. That being said, thanks for taking Duncan off our hands so we could put a real player in the outfield.

As I've always said, you don't do nothin' but prosper when you get outta bean town. Manny and me and Julio and Smoltz, we thrive and come alive headin' west where there's real life. Enjoy watchin' us in October 'cause you'll have lots of time on yer hands.

Bittah, bittah, bittah. But then I'd be bittah, too, if I rooted for a team that took two forevers to win it's first Series. But again, thanks for Lugo and Smoltz, and thanks for picking up their salaries. Thanks for letting Slaughter score from first in 1946. Thanks for pitching Lonborg vs. Gibson in Game 7 in 1967.
And--all kidding aside--thanks for Barney Frank and Teddy. We need more leaders with their spine. But then again, if they were ballplayers, you would have traded them to St. Louis by now.

GCMissouri said:

Yeah whatever Yaga. Obviously several people have already pointed out how ignorant you are. The Cardinals fans are the best in baseball. They understand the game well and unlike Red Sox fans, realize that there are other teams in baseball besides the Yankees. You can't judge Cardinals fans by how they were feeling in Game 3 of the most irrelevant World Series in the history of baseball. (After the media crammed the 2004 ALCS down the throats of everyone in America outside of New York & Boston, the World Series was an after thought.) Do us all a favor and crawl back into your cubby hole of a stadium seat behind the Green Monster and don't type comments about other baseball teams that you obviously know nothing about!

GCMissouri said:

BTW, 10XChamps: spot on with your Ted Kennedy & Barney Frank comment. You took Yaga to the woodshed with that one! Although, I'm sure it will greatly upset poor Mr. Yaga since the greatest swimmer in the history of Lake Chappaquiddick has brain cancer. My guess is that Yaga is probably the 2nd cousin of Rachel Maddow. 10X, the RNC needs your contribution right now!

Hey Fred, the Sox have won nine world series (only one less than St. Louis), so don't gloat too much.

and ohouigheighi, you're getting all bent about a 'wild card team that got hot exactly at the right time..."

So what, pray tell, were the Cardinals in 2005? Only the team with the second- (or maybe third-) worst team in terms of regular season winning percentage to win the World Series....(and regarding your little juicing comment - seems McGwire - St. Louis' favorite redheaded stepchild) was just as guilty. Careful where you tread...

Cards fans, don't let Yaga get your goat as he/she so clearly did. I also was at Game 3, and came to the stadium when they opened the gates at Game 4. All geared up in Sox apparel - and received congratulations from every single cards fan I met. I wish cards fans were less passionate so I could get great seats the day of the game, instead of planning two months out.

So don't dare lump ALL red sox fans in there with Yaga.

Uh, sorry - 2006....not 2005

Granted, Fred was way off with this Cubs of AL comment, but for the record, the BoSox have won just 7: 1903, 1912, 1915, 1916, 1918, 2004, 2007.

Now that Chris Duncan has been released by the
Sox how about re-signing him with Cards. He could
become another Sox gift. A stint in Memphis
may be what the doctor ordered.

I liked Chris Duncan and last season he dented the Green Monster during inter-league play, but then went on the disabled list and ultimately surgery. I put Dunky-Dunc at the top of my draft list for the fantasy league for good measure. He started the season well, but then became horribly fooled at the plate.

He's not keeping his dominant eye on the ball because of his stance. Doesn't he bat left and throw right? He needs to close his stance and/or get his eyes checked. The coaches in Boston couldn't figure Smoltz was tipping pitches so I don't think they are working with Chris either.

I root for Boston on the AL side, but never against the Cardinals. What happened after the All-Star game? I did load up on Yankees for the fantasy league too (follow the money)

oh well, forgetaboutit
peace

GC Missouri and 10X come on, really? Do you really think well rewarded doctors who don't actually heal patients is what this nation needs? That sort of is like seeing Duncan's first 2 years and then getting the injured Duncan afterwards. Go Republican, lets over-reward fat cats for our own hard work. That's why I appreciate Teddy and usually Frank!

BTW Duncan worked hard and has talent, but like Jim Edmonds got physically messed up so he was not much of a contributor. Well not until a year later for the Cubs. Maybe we'll see Duncan again, maybe not, but if we do I will root for him. That's what makes Cardinal Fans stand apart!!!
