BOSTON _ Red Sox rehabbing shortstop Jed Lowrie (wrist) was back at Fenway Park Friday afternoon, taking early batting practice and will rejoin the PawSox on Saturday in Scranton.

He was checked out by team physician Dr. Thomas Gill and has been given the go-ahead to continue to play.

It's been a long and difficult road to recovery since he had surgery in April. Every time it appears he's ready to return to action full time, he suffers a setback.

"We can't force the issue," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona. "He understands that, but we have to try to get an honest read on where he is to make decisions."

Lowrie was slated to be the club's every day shortstop out of spring training before his ailing wrist, which he dealt with and played through during the 2008 season, forced him to the operating table.

Francona explained Lowrie continues to feel a "zinger" when he checks his swing or when there's swelling in the area.

"The biggest thing is he knows that he's not hurting himself," said Francona. "He's trying to get past that. . . There's a mental side to it, also."
