It looks like Billy Wagner will not become a Red Sox. Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports this morning that the New York Mets relief pitcher will invoke his no-trade clause to block a deal to the Red Sox, who claimed Wagner off waivers. Rosenthal cites an unnamed major-league source. A Wagner deal was thought to be on the rocks because the Red Sox were not willing to give Wagner a promise that they would not offer him salary arbitration after this season. Boston was willing to meet another of Wagner's demands, that they not pick up a club option for next season that is included in his current contract. Wagner, a hard-throwing 38-year-old who is coming off Tommy John surgery, would like to get back to a closing role, and does not want to be a long-term set-up man for Jonathan Papelbon.
