BOSTON - Hold off on making Junichi Tazawa a rock-solid starting pitching option for the Red Sox the remainder of this season.
The Japanese rookie was pounded for nine loud runs in four innings Thursday as the White Sox rolled to an easy 9-5 win at Fenway Park. The victory prevented Boston from a four-game sweep and cut the Red Sox' wild card lead over Texas to 1.5 games.
Instead of the calm, cool righty who held the Yankees scoreless through six innings last Saturday, Tazawa looked more like an untested rookie making just his fourth major league start on this night. Tazawa was raked for four runs in both the second and third innings and a single run in the fourth before handing the ball over to Manny Delcarmen.
Tazawa (2-3) gave up 10 hits, walked one and struck out two White Sox. He allowed six singles, three doubles and a two-run home run to Carlos Quentin.
The Red Sox were shut out for four innings by starter John Danks (12-8) and fell behind 9-0. Boston then hit back-to-back home runs off the bats of J.D. Drew and Alex Gonzalez. The Sox added two runs in the eighth inning on RBI doubles by David Ortiz and Jason Bay and another in the ninth on Drew's second home run of the game.
In order to protect the bullpen, infielder Nick Green pitched the final two innings for Boston and held the White Sox to no runs and no hits.
