PAWTUCKET -- Tim Wakefield had a strong outing in his second rehab start for Pawtucket Friday night. The Red Sox knuckleballer tossed 5.2 innings and limited Rochester, the third-best hitting team in the International League, to just two hits and one run with four strikeouts. He walked one, and hit one batter. He was scheduled to throw 80 pithces and had two outs on 79 pitches in the top of the fifth inning when Pawtucket manager Ron Johnson approached the mound and asked him if he wanted to stay in the game to try to get the third out of the inning. He said yes. The batter he faced, Justin Huber, hit a home run off of Wakefield in the second inning. Wakefield hit Huber with on his second pitch to him and was then pulled from the game. He was given a standing ovation by the crowd and he tipped his hat to them as he left the field. He threw 82 pitches, 56 of which were for strikes. He left the game with Pawtucket leading, 2-1. The PawSox are trying to snap a 10-game losing streak. |
