The Houston Astros have hired Brad Mills, Terry Francona's bench coach during his entire career with the Red Sox, as their new manager. Mills will replace the fired Cecil Cooper. A news conference is scheduled at 4 p.m. This will be Mills' first big-league managing job. He has 11 years of minor-league managing experience in the Cubs, Rockies and Dodgers systems. Mills has been associated with Francona going back to his days in Philadelphia, when Mills served as the Phillies' first-base coach. He was apparently Houston's second choice, but moved to the head of the pack when former Washington Nationals manager Manny Acta chose the Cleveland Indians job. Mills takes over a team that reached the World Series in 2005 but has since fallen into mediocrity. The Astros were 74-88 this past season, fifth in the six-team National League Central. |
