In an interview this week on ESPN Radio in St. Louis, 40-40 man turned power-hitting freak show turned steroid advocate turned steroid whistleblower turned celebrity boxer Jose Canseco congratulated his former Oakland A's teammate Mark McGwire for landing a job as hitting instructor with the St. Louis Cardinals, and also expressed regret over writing the book "Juiced," which helped blow the lid of the steroid scandal in baseball. "In hindsight, I destroyed my life. I destroyed people's lives around me. I embarrassed a lot of players and if I could turn back the hands in time, I would do it a different way, I would definitely do it." Canseco said he would probably never be able to have a role in the game again, not so much because he has acknowledged steroid use, but because he wrote a book about it: "I committed the cardinal sin and I will pay for it the rest of my life, but I don't believe all of the other players will pay for it. It was a huge, huge mistake for writing the book 'Juiced' and I just don't want all of the other players to pay for what I have been paying for the last ten years." Canseco also indicated his belief that, far from damaging baseball, the steroid scandal actually drummed up further interest in the game -- and he asserted that now the game is being cleaned up. |
