For now, Pedro won't talk about the Yankees

Pedro Martinez is one win away from a return to the World Series -- this time with the Philadelphia Phillies -- and if the Phillies can close out the Dodgers tonight at Citizens Bank Park, Martinez might be set to pitch in the second game of the Series, at Yankee Stadium.

It would be hard for that "Who's Your Daddy" chant not to reverberate through the head of any Red Sox or Yankee fan just thinking about it.

Boston.com's Peter Abraham asked Martinez about the possibility yesterday, as Martinez was tossing a bullpen session yesterday in Philadelphia. But Martinez wouldn't bite, telling Abraham: "I know what you're trying to do. Not yet."

By the way, Martinez's struggles against New York in parts of the 2003 and 2004 seasons almost make you forget what a fine career he had against the Yankees. In 32 starts, as Abraham notes, his career ERA against New York is 3.02 -- you'd be hard-pressed to find many pitchers with better numbers against the Yankees of the 1990s and 2000s. That Martinez's record against New York is just 11-11 says more about what the Red Sox offense was able to accomplish against the Yankees than it does about Pedro himself.
