Francona not on field for introductions, bad taco to blame

ANAHEIM, Calif. _--When Angels manager Mike Scioscia was introduced during pregame ceremonies, there wasn't an opposing manager on the field to give the traditional hand shake -- and it's all because of Del Taco.

Red Sox manager Terry Francona did not come out to the field when he was introduced. Scioscia shrugged his shoulders when he realized Francona wasn't there. Instead, Red Sox slugger David Ortiz came over and gave Scioscia a hug.

Francona joked earlier in the day that he ate some bad tacos -- apparently, they were worse than he'd realized.

He nearly didn't feel well enough to manage the game, with bench coach Brad Mills preparing to take over less than an hour before first pitch.

After the 5-0 defeat, the first question Francona was asked was how he was feeling.

"Not very well, thank you. I appreciate you asking. It's been a tough day," he said.

He then explained that his fondness for Del Taco was what got him in trouble.

Del Taco is a California-based Mexican food chain that advertises at Angel Stadium with a large sign in the left field stands.

"Probably Del Taco. I know there's a big sign -- they don't support MLB, do they? They just support the Angels? Yeah, it was Del Taco," he said.

The villainous taco was still on his mind moments later, when he was asked about an argument he had with first base umpire CB Bucknor.

"What was your main complaint or beef there?" a reporter asked the Sox manager.

"Don't bring up the word beef, please," Francona responded.
