Sean McAdam of the Boston Herald reports that, according to multiple baseball executives and scouts, the Red Sox are likely to pursue starting pitcher Rich Harden, a pitcher with great ability who has had a ton of injury problems in the past. According to McAdam, the Sox appear likely to approach the free agent market with an eye toward veteran pitchers whose value may be depressed by recent injury problems, but who may have a big upside. That's the approach that brought John Smoltz and Brad Penny to Boston last year. And it means that other potential targets could include Ben Sheets and Mark Mulder, McAdam reports. And what happens when Halladay gets injured, as he has in each of the past few seasons? These injuries can add up in an aging pitcher. Or, instead of being a savior as the WEEI yuppie project him to be, what happens if he turns out to be a complete bust in the playoffs, a spot he's never even come close to pitching in? Then not only is getting Halladay for one year a big mistake, but "opening the vault" is an even worse one.
Please. Sure, Brad Penny didn't turn out to be a third ace, to return to his Cy Young form.... but he did the job of a 5th starter, giving the team a chance to win every 5th day. If the Sox offense didn't suck for most of the year, we'd have a far different view of him. Shut WEEI off your radio, and get a grip with reality.
