henry_1201.jpgIn an e-mail to the Boston Globe, Red Sox owner John Henry has criticized some small-market teams for not spending revenue-sharing money to build more competitive teams, and called for replacing baseball's current formula with a payroll tax accompanied by a minimum payroll figure for all MLB teams.

"Change is needed and that is reflected by the fact that over a billion dollars have been paid to seven chronically uncompetitive teams, five of whom have had baseball's highest operating profits. Who, except these teams, can think this is a good idea?" Henry wrote to the Globe.

Henry has in the past spoken in support of a salary cap to help maintain competitive balance in baseball, but in his comments to the Globe he said that MLB's free-market system should continue, but with a heavy tax on the highest-spending teams.
