With Alex Gonzalez destined for Toronto and questions abounding about who will play shortstop for the Red Sox next season, second baseman and former American League MVP Dustin Pedroia now says that Sox personnel have asked him about changing position. And according to Peter Gammons of ESPNBoston.com, Pedroia not only says he can move to short, he says he wants to do it. Pedroia was an All-American shortstop at Arizona State and also played the position in the minor leagues. He last played shortstop professionally in 2006, with the PawSox. According to Gammons' report, the Red Sox may feel that it would be easier to move Pedroia to shortstop and then find a replacement at second base than it would be to sign a suitable everyday player at shortstop, which has long been a trouble spot for the Sox. |
