Newly acquired catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia is now at Mass. General Hospital being treated for an unknown infection in his lower right leg. He's been placed on the 15-day disabled list and replaced by Dusty Brown.

Red Sox manager Terry Francona said Saltalamacchia was sick on Wednesday and complained of an issue in his right lower leg. He went to the hospital for tests and "I think we thought it would be a quick look and he'd be back," but "an hour turned into two and three and he ended up getting back right about game time."

Francona, who ironically helps sponsor a web site called StrikeOutInfection.com, said the doctors still are unclear what is ailing the backup catcher.

"It's my understanding that they've eliminated the MRSA but they're waiting on some blood tests to come back on the staph," he said.

Saltalamacchia will be on IV antibiotics for 48-72 hours and everyone hopes that knocks the virus away. Francona said that Saltalamacchia doesn't remember hitting or cutting his leg.
