Coco Crisp headed to Boston?

Sean McAdam will have a report in Saturday's Journal that a proposed trade between Atlanta and Cleveland, in which outfielder Ryan Langerhans will move from the Braves to the Indians, could be the first move in a series of steps that will land Cleveland outfielder Coco Crisp in Boston. The acquisition of Langerhans will give the Indians the outfielder they need to replace Crisp. There's no word as to who the Sox would trade in exchange for Crisp, but McAdam reports the Indians were known to have had talks with Atlanta about third-base prospect Andy Marte before Marte was traded to the Red Sox, and it's reasonable to assume they'd ask about him again. Marte's name was raised in a Sox-Indians trade rumor reported by a suburban Boston newspaper last week.

Interesting stuff, Art. Do you think it would be a multiplayer deal or just one for one?

No way I do a Marte for Crisp. No way.

I've got to imagine, if it is true that talks have broken down between Seattle and Boston about Jeremy Reed. Seattle must be asking for more than just Clement or Arroyo.

However, I wonder what Cleveland is asking for in return. It appeared earlier in the day that the Indians were looking to obtain Jason Johnson by signing him to a one-year deal. Obviously, his agent must have taken a good long look at the contracts that have been handed out.
Since Clement was pursued by Cleveland last year in free agency, they may have interest in obtaing him a year later.

No matter how it happens, Crisp is a very nice answer to Damon bolting for the Yankees. However, I don't think he's an answer to lead off. He strikes out too much and does not do a good job of drawing walks. If he could be more patient at the plate he could probably move his OBP into the area of .360. Currently, I think he's more suited to hit down in the order. A guy who swings early in the count as Crisp does is not what you want from a leadoff hitter. I think Boston's pursuit of Julio Lugo to play shortstop answers the question of who leads off.

And this probably signifies that the Red Sox will go hard after Millwood. Crisp is affordable and even more money would be saved if Clement is dealt.

Marte for Crisp? So basically Renteria, + $11 million for Coco Crisp?? Please, tell me that's not true. One name I don't know why isn't being heard more, as I think he'd be an excellent fit, is Brad Wilkerson.

* In all of MLB, Wilkerson was #7 in pitches per plate appearance in 2005 (Damon at #84). He was #2 in 2004 (Damon #13), and #1 in 2003 to Damon's #8.
* He can play all OF positions or 1st, and had most time in center last year.
* Wilkerson seems to hit better playing center too - had his highest BA there at .267, and a nice .374 OBP in 2005. His 3 year numbers are almost identical. In comparison, Crisp as a LF in '05, .302 BA & .348 OBP vs. .268 BA and .302 OPB in center. In '04, he had a .352 BA and .391 OBP in left vs. .281 BA and .327 OBP in CF. Crisp is a LF - and not a leadoff batter. Wilkerson can fill both holes.
* His 3 year BA is .257 to Damon's .298 - BUT - his OBP for that time is .368 vs. Damon's .364. He walks a ton.
* He can lead off or hit lower in the order for power. Before last year, hit 20, 19, and 32 homers.
* He's played in pitcher's parks his whole career, and had to deal with Frank Robinson messing with him last year. He also played through injuries all of 2005.
* He's only 28, and made only $3 million last year.
* He's a gamer, and his defense is at the very least solid. Much stronger arm than Damon too.

He's expendable to Texas, who needs pitching badly - which the Sox have. Clement or Arroyo for Wilkerson would make sense on both sides. Make this deal, they could still throw Damon's money at Millwood or other pitching too.

As for SS, why not the best defensive SS in the game in Izturis and a reliever for Wells? He's coming off Tommy John, but Graf and Cora can fill in and hit 9th until he comes back midseason. Wilkerson and Izturis would get the Sox right back on track. I don't want wife beater Lugo on this team...

Well, I can't see trading Marte for Crisp. If we can get him for Clement or Arroyo, and maybe Murphy I'd do it in a second. Wilkerson also makes sense, but I've gotta believe Wells is eventually going to the Padres for Adrian Gonzalez who can platoon with Youkilis at 1b.

Renteria + $11 million for Coco Crisp is actually a great deal, because Crisp will be such a cheap player for the next three years, and Renteria stinks.

Jay | December 23, 2005 11:41 PM link

So we get an excellent outfielder in Coco Crisp for a young kid who doesn't fit? WHAT A STEAL! Any chance we can put Manny in the deal too? For Broussard or even better yet Michael Aubrey? I LOVE THIS DEAL!

SoxLover | December 24, 2005 1:16 AM link

no way, Marte for Crisp. Love the Clement or Arroyo for Wilkerson deal; With Prior available, Sox should be all over that guy - deal Manny for Prior.

sbd | December 24, 2005 8:27 AM link

As a Cleveland Indian fan, I have to say that I don't want to see a Crisp for Marte deal. Crisp is extremely cheap, and has got better every year he has played. Cleveland would need to pay-out a lot of money to get a veteran with his abilities. Add to that the fact he's gained 15lbs of muscle, and his blazing speed, and you have a young perrenial all-star.

I would still like to see Manny back in Cleveland. Perhaps Crisp for Manny? That gives boston their lead-off man and CF, plus they can use Manny-money for ss, and/or trade Matt and sign Kevin....Boston would do real good with that deal. Cleveland would get their outfield power, and should go with one of their 3 awesome prospects as a fifth starter.

Heath Malcomson | December 25, 2005 1:07 AM link

What the hell do the Braves want a nothing like Riske for? You AL-centric people don't get that Langerhans is actually pretty good. No way this trade happens.

Ralph MR | December 25, 2005 3:24 PM link

Let the yankees have the over paid crapy throwing arm droping batting avarage loser who looks stupid with his knew hair cut we save lots of money to sign better players. thank you yankees now we can get a cf,ss and another starter.

glad he's gone | December 25, 2005 7:05 PM link

Who is being traded in the Langerhans deal?

Art | December 26, 2005 11:10 AM link

The front office knows they have a mess on there hands and at this point are on the verge of throwing money at the problems to get them to go away. Keep in mind that the Redsox brass have yet to return to work from the holidays since the Glaus deal finalized,... Millwood agreed to his deal with the Rangers....AND MOST OF ALL SINCE MANNY TOLD JOHNNY DAMON TO SIGN WITH THE YANKEES, in other words they have not had to answer any questions yet. So just when they thought there PR couldnt get any worse... it did. So what is the best way to cover up a mess? Make a big good move! Rember we acquire Josh Beckett REAL soon after Theo left....

Such as:
Manny, ALOT OF CASH (which they have) and a prospect
for
Miguel Tejada

On paper this doesn seem like that great of a move but I personally think it would be brilliant.

IMO, I feel like the only reason the Abreu deal (Clement and Nixon for Abreu) never went through to begin with was because they felt it was risky do to the "rumors" that Abreu had a Pedro type attitude, and with the acquisition of Abeu (who is good but over hyped) it would give a steady healthy body in LF something we are not always garunteed with Nixon.

And If we were to trade Manny, Cash and possibly Alvarez at the most (thats what I think it would take in the end) for Tejada it would give us a spanish speaking leader and make that deal possible.

And I would play my line-up like this:
1. Loretta (Right) 2nd
2. Abreu (Left) RF
3. Tejada (Right) SS
4. Ortiz (Left) DH
5. Lowell (Right) 3rd
6. Varitek (Switch) C
7. Marte (Right) LF
8. Graffanino/ Youk (both Right) 1B
9. Centerfeilder..............

With my centerfeilder, I would not go trading a consistant, effective, and valuable Bronson Arroyo for Reed just yet without alot of thought. Keep in mind Hunter will be a FA at the end of the season. I would also be signing alot of pitching during that free agent class to, Mulder, Zito, Wood, Schimdt, Radke, Garland, Beurhle,...ect.

Lucas Coffey | December 27, 2005 12:48 AM link

youd better hope its marte for crisp thats reasonable. the indians want marte, and more, possible arroyo, mota or all 3 for crisp.

willow | December 27, 2005 2:49 AM link

Atlanta Braves
1- Marcus Giles
2- Renteria
3- CJones
4- AJones
5- Franceour
6- LaRoche
7- Betemit
8- McCann

Don't hate on Renteria, the guy had one bad year batting .276 and scoring 100 runs. Do not forget 4 all star games, 2 Gold Gloves, World Series MVP... He is only 29... The Red Sox made a big mistake on that one.

word, crisp is sick, deal = sweet, how did Cleveland get roped into this one?
