Strong outing for Papelbon

Red Sox pitcher Jonathan Papelbon threw five innings of one-hit ball today as the Red Sox took a 5-0 lead into the sixth inning against the Florida Marlins at Fort Myers. Papelbon had two strike outs and walked three. Kevin Youkilis hit a three-run home run for the Red Sox, who are wearing their St. Patrick's Day green uniforms.

Sox make 2nd round of cuts

The Red Sox this morning announced that they have optioned right-handed pitcher Cla Meredith to Triple-A Pawtucket, and have reassigned six other players to the club's minor league camp: left-handers Craig Breslow, Mike Bumatay and Phil Seibel; right-hander Matt Ginter; infielder Jed Lowrie; and outfielder Luke Allen.

The Red Sox now have 40 players in camp, including 10 nonroster invitees. The breakdown: 17 pitchers, 3 catchers, 13 infielders and 7 outfielders.

The club is expecting the return soon of some familiar faces -- catcher Jason Varitek and relief pitcher Mike Timlin -- because of the American team's elimination last night from the World Baseball Classic. Still playing in the Classic are designated hitter David Ortiz and relief pitcher Julian Tavarez (Dominican Republic).
