Arroyo shuts down Sox bats
In their final appearance of the spring in Florida, the Red Sox went up against old friend Bronson Arroyo today, and they didn't get the best of things. Arroyo, working against a lineup that featured several Red Sox regulars, pitched 7 shutout innings, giving up just 3 singles, striking out 9 and walking 1. In the second inning, he was struck in the tailbone by a ball off the bat of Mike Lowell. The ball rolled to third base, and Lowell had an infield single, but Arroyo seemed unfazed.
Speaking to ESPN's Duke Castiglione after being removed from the game, Arroyo said that facing his former mates was "the most fun I've had in a long time out on the field." Arroyo's strikeout victims included Wily Mo Pena, the man the Red Sox acquired for Arroyo in a trade last week.
Tim Wakefield pitched four solid innings for the Red Sox, giving up a solo home run to Rich Aurilia. The Red Sox trailed, 2-0, in the top of the 8th inning.
The Red Sox travel tomorrow night to Philadelphia, where they will play exhibition games Saturday and Sunday before leaving for opening day in Arlington, Texas.
