Santana saga nearing completion

Sean McAdam reports there are indications the long-running Johan Santana trade talks may soon be completed.

Buster Olney of ESPN.com wrote today that the Twins are seeking final offers for their ace left-hander. According to McAdam, a decision on where to send Santana may be made as soon as tonight, although an announcement may be delayed until the team that acquires him completes, or at least begins, negotiations on a new contract.

While no one would be surprised if they jumped back in it -- especially since the other teams in the sweepstakes are their two biggest rivals (one geographic, one competitive) -- the Yankees are thought to be out of the running, leaving the field to the Red Sox and the Mets.

Although the Sox have consistently refused to budge from their two offers -- either Jon Lester, Coco Crisp, Jed Lowrie and Justin Masterson, or Jacoby Ellsbury, Lowrie and Masterson -- there are indications the team is willing to be creative in an attempt to get a deal done.

The Twins, having extended the contracts of Justin Morneau and Michael Cuddyer, may have decided there's no chance to re-sign Santana, particularly since he rejected a four-year, $80 million extension offer.
