Give Kevin Millwood a shot. We've seen Aceves already and he has been much better in a relief pitching role.

A Series Matter: Red Sox-Orioles and the First "Half"
I think the NESN promo on the upcoming series with the O's is both classless and demeaning. It ends with "...help the Sox keep the O"s where they belong: At the bottom of the Al East". If I were Buck showlater, I would get a copy and show it to my team.
Red Sox fans are beginning to delvelop a reputation once reszewrved for obnoxious Yankee fans. A TV network should know better.

Sox catch break on game-ending play
The Bosox got lucky on a bad call. There was no tag and the runner was safe touching home plate with his other leg while Varitek missed the tag by a FOOT! We need instant replays on plays at home plates. Go Jays!!

Sox catch break on game-ending play
Terrific throw, terrific block. The foot might have touched home plate but Tek and Darnell's play made it so close we got the "OUT!" call. Wicked ending.
GO SOX!

Last week Cameron, this week Lackey?
Gee Donaldson, I'm quite sure Theo takes responsibility for his investments, good or bad. The Lackey "investment" was for a pitcher with a proven track record and was by all accounts a decent acquisition. Are you going to sit there and state that you KNEW that Lackey was going to suck this bad before he got here?
They all don't work out, pal. That's the breaks of the game. Quit being a tool.

Red Sox 10, Astros 4: Miller wins behind offensive onslaught
No matter how well he pitches, Miller is going to be the victim of the numbers game. The question in the end is, will he end up in the pen or back to Pawtucket to stay stretched out?

Hottovy anxious to return to big leagues
From what I saw of him losing or at least helping to lose for the Red Sox when he was with them briefly (mercifully briefly), Tommy Hottovy barely deserves to be back in the Little Leagues, let alone in the Minor Leagues. The guy was a very unfunny joke.

Reddick in lineup, Cameron reportedly on way out
McDonald batting second? Another great move by Francona. Any of the bottom four hit better than Mr. 115 bat avg.

(Past) Time to put Big Papi in the starting lineup
yes it's time for Papi and it's time to send Nancy Drew, MacDonald & Cameron to Pawtucket and give some young guys a chance. That trio should donate their salaries, they plain stink!

Sox find interleague a "disadvantage"
Simple Solution--get rid of this DH bs and get back to playing REAL baseball----sounds like a bunch of sour grapes coming from the sox--they actually think, they are the ONLY team affected by playing under different rules ???????

David Ortiz still in line to be a Type A free agent
I wonder if the Red Sox worries about David Ortiz's age (and body type comps) would prevent them from offering more than a one- or two-year deal. If he winds up in the Type A bucket, he'll likely get offers the Red Sox would be unwilling to match.
I think the Red Sox would not dismiss the idea of offering arbitration to Jason Varitek out of hand, particularly if he does wind up as a Type B. He's performed at a much higher level than they expected so far this year and if his low level of use prevents the dog days of August from doing their customary damage to his game, he'll be even more valuable. Plus, the Red Sox front office can't be blind to the fact that they'll win a lot of fan goodwill by treating him with respect.
Your assessment of J.D. Drew, on the other hand, barring a huge turnaround in his season, is dead on. He's a contender for the 'Eric Gagne Memorial Bad Deal Award' as it is. He might as well take the #7 jersey off right now.
Marco Scutaro may be hovering near the Type A boundary now, but if Jed Lowrie comes back healthy before too long and resumes raking, the paucity of at-bats that will result will hurt his chances of maintaining his Type B ranking. And with Jose Iglesias looming, I'd have thought his chances at an arb offer were slim in the first place, anyway. His defense is nothing to write home about; he's more rangy than Jed Lowrie, but that's not saying much. I think he's gone after 2011.
Papelbon is an enigma. His K rate is back up where it should be, his BB/9 is way down, but his WHIP is still very worrisome for a closer. He's been lucky not to have blown more saves this year. But it's not clear Bard is ready to take over, either. Don't know what they'll do or what they should do.

Pirates lost out in Bay trade
The trade was actually worse than the author of this article paints for the Pirates. Because the Pirates thought they had their starting 3B in Andy LaRoche, they dealt Jose Bautista to Toronto for a 3-string catcher. Bautista is now the best power hitter in baseball, and Bay trade caused the chain reaction.

Pirates lost out in Bay trade
"There are a lot of reasons the Pirates have struggled in the National League Central for so many years. But the lack of return in the Jason Bay trade is one of the biggest."
I don't see how this is one of the biggest reasons for their struggles. Granted, the Pirates could have gotten talent that ended up performing better in the end, but Bay was going to be walk in 3 months and there is no question that at the time this was far more value than 2 compensatory picks. Even if they had ended up just using those picks, it's not as if Brentz or Workman all of sudden make the Pirates a far superior team. At the end of the day, while the prospects didn't pan out, the logic behind this trade, and all the trades the organization made during that year, was sound. Sell expensive, or easily replaceable, guys who you have limited control over for super cheap guys who you can hold for up to 6+ years if you want. It returned good value in the Xavier Nady and Octavio Dotel trades, it didn't in the Bay deal, among others.
At the very least, this trade, combined with The Freddy Sanchez trade, and the Snell/Wilson trade saved the team substantial amounts of money, while costing them hardly any wins. They were then able to invest into the draft and international market more heavily than in years past. It's possible that without those trades the team never could've signed Stetson Allie, or Luis Heredia, or Zack von Rosenberg.
At the end of the day, it can't be denied that the talent that came back in the Jason Bay trade didn't pan out. Nevertheless, the organization had far more significant reasons for failure over the past 2 decades than a single trade that was philosophically sound. I'd look to the management/ownership philosophy of the late 90s/early 00s for the biggest reasons why the team has failed for so long (ie try to buy mediocre free agents, shoot for 81 wins, and go cheap in the draft).
